In November 2018 Cornwall Blood Bikes were invited to give a presentation to the folks of RAF St Mawgan which was attended by our very own Membership Secretary Brendan Hale . CBB were exceptionally lucky to have been put to a vote by the stations charity committee and CBB came out as the overall winner to be supported by RAF St Mawgan who then embarked on a year of fundraising, which we have endeavoured to support where we can.
After the presentation in November Brendan was invited to accompany RAF personnel including the station commander into Newquay to help them with the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. CBB is extremely fortunate to have quite a few retired, ex, and current military personnel as volunteers at the charity, and a cause that we are honoured to support.
The Royal Cornwall Show 2019 saw the RAF Regiment play host to a paintball competition and the art of “war wounds” with all monies going to the station’s chosen charity. On a very wet Friday CBB volunteers Steve, Jayne & Ian made their way from the Blood Bike stand up to the RAF Stand accompanied by our BMW R1200 RTP “In Memory of Burt” under RAF Regiment escort, which drew quite a crowd. We had a phenomenal opportunity to have our bike in front of an iconic spitfire and pose with members of the RAF Regiment and the station commander as well as our Fundraising Manager Ian Butler having a go at the paintball. This brought back happy memories for our Ian who is a retired Naval Submariner and also for Steve who had served as RAF Regiment and spent time stationed at RAF St Mawgan.
On the 11th July 2019 CBB volunteers Vice Chair Jayne, Fleet Manager John, and Brendan Hale were invited on a stunningly sunny day for a cheque presentation afternoon at the base, where they were made to feel most welcome. An outstanding £1,408,12 was presented to the charity.
We would like to take this opportunity to say a very big heartfelt thank you to every single member of station staff based at RAF St Mawgan for this remarkable amount of money. There is a very special link between CBB and the military, this money will continue to ensure that our wheels are kept turning around Cornwall providing our free charity service to our hospitals and hospices, and in turn helping the people of Cornwall.
